UP3985

UP 3985 is a Challenger articulated locomotive, built in 1943, the biggest still operational steam locomotive in the world. With its tender, it weighs a million pounds. But in the early morning light, in all the glory of its steam, a million pounds of steel becomes almost ethereal. In its youth, hauling strategic cargo cross country during World War II, UP 3985 must have crossed the Mojave Desert many times, and would have stopped at Kelso depot for refreshment.
