Two springs later, we arrived at the cabin as the snow was leaving, and found the electricity gone as well. We walked downhill, to a neighbor whose lights were on. He made us tea, called PG&E, and shared his hundred-or-more photos of the yearling bear who'd been hanging out in his yard, ripping up stumps for grubs and generally enjoying herself: obviously the offspring of the one I met. He kindly gave me all his bear pix. I called this little painting Goldilocks, and the photo-taker bought it as a birthday present for his wife, a collector of everything bear-themed.
