I once read an essay in the Phi Beta Kappa newsletter to the effect that no funny joke is universally funny, that funniness depends on the shared beliefs and affiliations of the teller and the hearer. So far, I haven't found a single person who doesn't get a laugh out of The Democratic Headquarters. I have painted and repainted, sold and resold it, sold note cards of it as fast as I can print them to equal numbers of fervent Democrats and Republicans. I can't verbalize exactly what the joke is, but it seems to be universal.
