Gallery Five: 2002

When the owners of the OX Cattle Company removed to Arizona in 2000, they bought from me a painting of their ranch . But they also invited me to drive up the road next morning, to witness and photograph the last roundup of their cattle. In 2002 I got around to using that material.
I also made experiments with photographs of the Death Valley wagon train:
2002 was a good year for my painting, but, for reasons that escape me, I failed to take record photographs of most of it.

The OX cattle were first penned and sorted in corrals across Lanfair Road from the ranch. Then the riders attempted to herd them across the road into another enclosure with a loading chute, for putting them into cattle transports. They closed a gate across Lanfair Road, stopping any traffic from the north, and told me to back my truck south beyond a certain line, and not to get out of it.
